How to say the numbers in English.

The way in which people say the numbers in English varies a lot. In America, for example, the word “and” is not used before the last two figures.

For example:

325 In American English (Am.E.) is three hundred twenty-five, whereas in British English (Br.E) it is said three hundred and twenty-five

In British English when a number has three or more figures, and” is used before the last two figures (tens and units) of a number. As in class we study British English, we will centre in the British English form.

45 (Number with two figures) forty-five (no “and is necessary)

245 (Number with three figures) two hundred and forty-five

3100 (Number with three figures but without tens or units) three thousand, one hundred

If you follow this rules, you will find it very easy to say the numbers in English. We will follow these rules to say the number  3565389.456

  1. Divide the number into groups of three figures with commas  3 , 565, 389
  2. We start saying the numbers from left to right as if they were independent numbers separated by commas 3 , 565, 389 three
  3. We add the value that corresponds to that number 3, three million
  4. We add a comma after what we have 3, three million
  5. We take the following group and, again, we read it as if it were an independent number,   3 , 565, 389  three million, five hundred and sixty-five
  6. As we previously did we add the value 3 , 565, 389  three million, five hundred and sixty-five thousand
  7. We add a comma 3 , 565, 389  three million, five hundred and sixty-five thousand,
  8. We do the same with the next number and so on 3 , 565, 389  three million, five hundred and sixty-five thousand, three hundred and eighty-nine
  9. When we have said the units, if there are decimals, we say “point” and the decimals one by one  3,565,389.456  three million, five hundred and sixty-five thousand, three hundred and eighty-nine point four five six

To do this correctly you have to remember the following ideas

  1. Study and learn by heart the numbers from 1-99; 100; 1,000; 1,000,000;
  2. Remember that the commas ( , ) in British and American English separate hundreds, thousands, millions etc.
  3. Remember that the full stops  ( ) separate decimals and they are read “point”
  4. Remember that hundred, thousand, and million, when in the middle of a figure don’t have plural. 3,455 three thousand, four hundred and fifty-five
